Death threats shake up Adebayor - 26/03/07

Emmanuel Adebayor is contemplating quitting the Togo national team after receiving death threats prior to Saturday's 3-1 win over Sierra Leone.

The Togo forward Adebayor had said the team may boycott the Group Nine qualifier because of unpaid bonuses but he played and scored twice.

"Before the match, I received threats to my life warning me to play the match or else," he said.

"Thank God I scored two goals in this qualifying match against Sierra Leone."

He added: "I do not know what would have happened to me if I had not scored those goals."

The row over bonuses concerns payments which the players say they have not received for reaching World Cup 2006.

"I am only trying to put certain things right and correct a few mistakes in Togolese football but it appears some people do not like it," the Arsenal striker added Adebayor.

Adebayor was instrumental in Togo's victory, a win which took them top of the group.

Yet less than 24 hours earlier, the Togolese captain had decided not to play in the Nations Cup tie because of the threats.

"I was convinced by my coach Stephen Keshi to rescind the decision," said Adebayor.

"Now I am going to go back to Arsenal to think about my future.

"I have to protect my life and I have a family to look after."

Regarded as a football idol in Togo, Adebayor has come under fire from fans for his demands on the Togo Football Federation.

The international said he would consult Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger as well as members of his family about his future with Togo's national team.
